Pit and Fissure Sealant is a protective plastic coating, which is applied to the biting surfaces of the back teeth of a caries – susceptible tooth to protect it from bacteria.
How do Pit and Fissure Sealants work?
The back teeth usually have tiny pits and deep grooves that are usually where decay starts easily and cannot be cleaned with regular brushing and flossing.
Pit and Fissure sealants act as a protective barrier by sealing these areas and prevent the number of teeth that need to be filled later.
Who all should get Pit and Fissure Sealants?
Pit and fissure sealants should be given to those patients who have
- High caries risk.
- Xerostomia.
- Stained and deep pits and fissures.
- No evidence of proximal caries both clinically and radio-graphically.
